![]() Screen-time amongst the characters is divided up fairly well, leaving Batman and Robin in the dust. From a two-player perspective, this caused a lot of frustration and only seemed to get worse later in the game.Īs noted earlier, anyone looking for a Batman adventure you won’t find one here. At one point, I had to force my second player out of the game so that we could expand the screen to trigger an event. Some of the later levels were hampered by wonky camera angles and viewing perspectives, which proved difficult when playing split-screen. Although interesting to explore, at times I’d get stuck on cliffs or hang helplessly in midair. The levels themselves seemed more open than usual, expanding in scope and size as the game progressed. These distractions were my favorite part of Lego Batman 3, providing a much-needed reprieve from the monotony found within the primary campaign. Most notable are its mini-games, which include Tron-like “hacking” requiring maze navigation around computerized obstacles, and a side-scrolling space shooter reminiscent of Resogun. This mixes things up a bit and keeps the gameplay engaging, especially since most of the main characters have different abilities to explore (ie, Wonder Woman using her bands to deflect lasers or Martian Manhunter shapeshifting).Īs is typical of the Lego series, there’s plenty of content to explore, including over 150 characters to unlock. Characters also rotate in and out of levels, ensuring that players don’t get caught in a routine. Players waltz through a fairly linear level and solve puzzles to move forward while searching for studs and minikits to unlock content. The traditional Lego game formula is present as usual in this edition. The game’s cast of heroes and villains reluctantly join forces to defeat him in a variety of settings, including shrunken versions of the Earth’s most famous cities and the Lantern worlds. The Justice League scrambles to meet them head-to-head, but not before Brainiac steps in to shrink Earth for his marble collection. Besides all sorts of DC characters (both famous and obscure), there are also several celebrity characters, voiced by their real-life counterparts, including 60's TV Batman Adam West, filmmaker Kevin Smith and TV late night host Conan O'Brian.Īs usual, the game includes all sorts of collectibles which usually can only be found by playing through the story levels in Free Mode, using unlocked characters with abilities not available earlier.Lego Batman 3 opens to a familiar plot line: Lex Luthor has his heart set on becoming President of the World, dragging other villains along with him in his quest. All-in-all, the game includes more than 130 characters, the unlocking of which requires finding their tokens in the levels or completing quests that are given out from the game's several hub areas. Playing through the game's story mode unlocks more than a dozen different characters. There are also several side quests as well as races involving unlockable vehicles. Some variation from the standard gameplay comes in the form of Resogun-style shoot'em'up sequences and computer hacking scenes which take place in a Tron-style world. Non-superpowered characters like Batman, Robin, or Lex Luthor can gain new abilities by acquiring various suits, which unlike in the previous game, can be switched between on the fly. Abilities include the use of projectile weapons, explosives or grappling hooks, x-ray vision, various beams (laser, sonic, ice), mind control, smashing walls, illuminating dark areas, and many more. The game follows the template established by earlier LEGO games: players control several characters, and must use their special abilities to fight enemies, overcome obstacles and solve environment-based puzzles. However, faced with this new threat against the entire planet, both heroes and villains must team up to defeat Brainiac. Meanwhile, the Legion of Doom, led by Lex Luthor and the Joker, plan to capture the Justice League's Watchtower space station. He captures several Lanterns to gain possession of their power rings, which he plans to use to shrink the Earth and add it to his collection. ![]() The story picks up from the teaser at the end of the previous game, with Brainiac approaching Earth. While it prominently features Batman and his supporting cast, as indicated by the subtitle it moves beyond Gotham City into all corners of the DC universe, featuring the Justice League, the Legion of Doom and several Lantern Corps, with all sorts of heroes and villains making an appearance, and the story moving from Earth to outer space and several other planets. LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is the third LEGO game based on DC Comics characters.
